This was a revolution in power to the people government. Before this time there was never something like a democracy. Athens democracy is very important today because it has impacted the way we think about government. Reasons it was not truly democratic: only 12% of people could vote, strict rules on who could vote, and could spread roomer and kick people out. Some reasons it was a democracy are: people that could vote did get to vote on everything (it was a direct democracy), people could vote to kick people out of office, if you could vote it does not matter on your social class, and they had a lot of freedom and equal justice. There are sides on wether or not is was truly democratic. Sparta did not trade with anybody, also they did not travel or value coins, while Athens had a lot of trade and education.Īthens did have the first democracy, but its not much like ours today. It is probable that earlier tribal systems broke up during a period of economic decline and the splintered groups established themselves between 1000 and 800 bce as independent nuclei of city-states that covered peninsular Greece, the Aegean islands, and western Asia Minor. In Athens women had no public life, were deemed not smart, and worked at home. In Sparta a woman's purpose was to produce strong sons, they also had to obey their husband, but why could own property. Women were treaded different in each city. Sparta was ruled by two kings, while Athens had a democracy. city-state noun independent political state consisting of a single city and sometimes surrounding territory. While Athens was more humanistic, they valued art and education over anything else. Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens participate equally - either directly or through elected representatives - in the proposal, development, and creation of laws. Sparta was more militaristic, which means that they started training at 7 and was in the army till they died. Athens and Sparta we very different because of this. For city states that were land locked they did not fish they raised animals and grew crops. The mountains and sea made all of the city states different. Probably the most well know ones are Athens and Sparta. The five most powerful Greek city states were Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Megara, and Argos.
